In the late XIX century, our great-grandmother, Polonia Jaka, crossed the Pyrenees from Betelu (a small Navarrese village near Iruñea) towards the port of Burdeos with her six sons.
Her purpose was to save them from going to the war Spain was fighting with Cuba, so she embarked them in search for a new horizon in their lives.
Thus, our grandfather Diego F. Iturralde arrived in Argentina.
After a long way and an enormous sacrifice, in the year 1906, he built a hotel which he named “Euskalduna” (those who speak the Basque language “euskera”), where all the Basque from the area would gather.
Today, his grandchildren have chosen the name “Euskaldun Berri” (new Basque speaker), in his memory and as a good omen for our future. |
